Fringe Benefits: A Fringe Jean Jacket DIY

I like the notion of adding embellishments to clothing bits that are basic to create a statement. And fringe has been on my list. Don’t get me wrong, embroidery projects and patches are choices that are good too. However, I thought fringe would provide this jean jacket that was rigid movement.

And that is it is finished, I want the things to fringe ALL! You really can not even tell that the knee has been added on after the fact since it is tucked into the seams. Click through for the easy sewing hack that created the fringe appear smooth with the jacket.

How to Add Fringe into some Jean Jacket

Choose a thread that matches the thread of this jacket. I used denim thread (this exact one), which is the yellow thread commonly used on jeans. My jacket was matched by it .   Normally the stitches of jean coats (and regular jeans) will possess a flat felled seams. Therefore 1 side can open up and easily fit the fringe underneath, then put it back up for a look that will look like you bought it that way.

Measure and cut the knee for every arm and the back panel of the jacket separately (so you will have 3 parts of knee). Set aside.

Use a seam ripper to open one side of this felled seam. You want to to start the seam closest to the edge NOT both stitch lines.

Insert the fringe under the horn that is opened. . Then apply your sewing machine to stitch the seam closed again (together with the fringe sandwiched in between), trying to hit along with the older stitch lineup as you sew. Basically you’re recreating the stitch line to create make it seem finished again.

Do this with every arm and the panel .   We added another layer of fringe of a different color fringe into the back panel to make it stand out. And also kept the arms just one fringe color.

Note: You can definitely join the jacket and the fringe together without opening the stitches if you want upI think it looks a ton better to have a line.
